Technical Dossier
The KOLLMORGEN SERVOSTAR series represents one of the most widely deployed families of digital servo drives in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore platforms, and continuous-process chemical plants, SERVOSTAR drives are recognized for their deterministic torque/velocity control, robust EMC shielding, and compatibility with both resolver and encoder feedback systems. The series spans single-axis and multi-axis configurations, supporting CANopen, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherCAT, and DeviceNet fieldbus protocols depending on variant. Their 24 VDC logic supply architecture allows the control section to remain powered during main bus shutdown, a critical requirement in safety-instrumented systems (SIS) environments.
The SERVOSTAR product line originated from Kollmorgen's acquisition of the Seidel servo drive technology platform in the early 1990s. The first-generation SERVOSTAR CD (Compact Drive) established the resolver-based analog command interface standard. The second generation introduced the SERVOSTAR 600 platform — a fully digital drive with onboard motion controller, replacing the CD series and introducing the S300/S600/S700 sub-families differentiated by power class and communication capability.
The SERVOSTAR 300 (S300) targets single-axis applications at lower current ratings (3A–18A continuous). The SERVOSTAR 600 (S600) extends to 18A–72A continuous with expanded I/O. The SERVOSTAR 700 (S700) adds advanced multi-axis synchronization and EtherCAT support. The SERVOSTAR 620-AS is a specific variant within the S600 family, incorporating an integrated safety function (STO — Safe Torque Off) compliant with IEC 62061 SIL 2 / EN ISO 13849-1 PLd, making it suitable for machinery directive compliance without external safety relays. As of 2024, the S300/S600 platform has entered the mature/end-of-active-production phase; Kollmorgen's current strategic platform is the AKD2G series. Long-term maintenance and spare parts sourcing for SERVOSTAR 620-AS and related variants is therefore a primary operational concern for installed-base customers.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked models within the SERVOSTAR S300, S600, and S700 families. Each entry reflects the module's primary functional role within a servo axis or multi-axis system.

With the SERVOSTAR S300 and S600 platforms in the mature/end-of-active-production phase, OEM factory lead times for replacement units are extended or unavailable. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of SERVOSTAR 620-AS and related S600/S300 variants sourced through authorized distribution channels and verified surplus stock. All units are subject to pre-shipment functional verification. DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support including: unit-level replacement for failed drives, cross-reference identification for discontinued part numbers, firmware version matching for installed-base compatibility, and documentation packages (parameter backup files, wiring diagrams) upon request. For end-users operating SERVOSTAR drives in SIL 2 safety loops, DriveKNMS can supply units with traceable calibration records. Inquiries for bulk quantities, emergency replacement, or long-term supply agreements are handled directly by the technical sales team.
SERVOSTAR drives incorporate a multi-layer backplane and high-density power stage that require structured test protocols beyond standard power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following test sequence to all SERVOSTAR units prior to dispatch: (1) Visual inspection of power terminals, feedback connector pins, and bus capacitor condition. (2) Dielectric withstand test on DC bus rails per IEC 61800-5-1. (3) Functional power-on test: logic supply energization, fault code readout via RS-232, and parameter checksum verification. (4) Closed-loop motor spin test using a reference motor load to verify current loop, velocity loop, and position loop response. (5) Fieldbus communication test: CANopen NMT state machine cycle and/or PROFIBUS-DP data exchange verification as applicable to the specific variant. (6) STO function test for -AS variants: verification of STO input response time and output torque inhibit per IEC 62061. All test results are logged and retained for traceability. Units failing any stage are quarantined and not shipped.
