Technical Dossier
The Motorola MVME2600 series represents one of the most widely deployed VMEbus single-board computer (SBC) platforms in global heavy industry. Based on the PowerPC architecture, these boards have been installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil platforms, and continuous-process chemical plants where deterministic real-time performance and long-term hardware stability are non-negotiable requirements. The MVME2600 family operates within the VME64 backplane standard, making it backward-compatible with VME32 infrastructure — a critical factor for facilities that cannot afford full control system replacement. Installed base estimates place the MVME2600 series among the top five most common embedded SBC platforms in legacy Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and SCADA architectures globally.
The MVME2600 series was introduced by Motorola Computer Group in the mid-1990s as a successor to the MVME167 and MVME177 68k-based platforms, marking Motorola's transition to the PowerPC RISC architecture for embedded industrial computing. The initial MVME2600 variants used the MPC603e processor, with subsequent revisions migrating to the MPC604e for higher throughput applications. The MVME2604 variant — including the MVME2604 761I/O MVME260476 — introduced expanded I/O configurations and enhanced memory addressing, supporting up to 256 MB of ECC DRAM.
Motorola's embedded computing division was later acquired by Emerson Network Power, which continued to manufacture and support the MVME2600 line under the Emerson brand before transitioning support responsibilities to Artesyn Embedded Technologies. As of 2026, the entire MVME2600 series is classified as End-of-Life (EOL) by the current IP holder. No new production runs are planned. This places the MVME2600 squarely in the category of long-term maintenance parts, where third-party suppliers and refurbished inventory channels are the primary sourcing mechanism for operating facilities.
Compatibility note: MVME2600 boards interface with Motorola's MVME712 transition modules and MVME761 I/O transition modules (as referenced in the 761I/O designation of the MVME2604 761I/O MVME260476). These transition modules route front-panel I/O to rear-panel P2 connectors and are equally subject to obsolescence constraints.

The MVME2600 series presents specific test challenges due to its VME64 backplane interface, PowerPC processor architecture, and multi-layer PCB construction. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all MVME2600 units prior to dispatch:
