Technical Dossier
The S7-300 platform was introduced in 1993 as a successor to the SIMATIC S5 series, addressing the need for modular scalability and open fieldbus communication. The initial CPU generation (CPU 312–CPU 318) operated on the MPI (Multi-Point Interface) bus exclusively. By the late 1990s, Siemens introduced integrated PROFIBUS-DP ports on CPU 315-2 DP and above, enabling direct field device communication without a dedicated communications processor.
Compatibility note: S7-300 CPUs are not directly interchangeable with S7-400 or S7-1500 CPUs. Signal modules (SM) and function modules (FM) are physically and electrically specific to the S7-300 backplane bus. STEP 7 V5.x is the primary programming environment; TIA Portal supports S7-300 via a compatibility layer from V13 SP1 onward.

The SIMATIC S7-300 platform has entered the mature phase of its product lifecycle. Siemens has formally recommended migration to the S7-1500 series for new projects, and several S7-300 CPU and signal module variants have been discontinued or placed on RFQ availability review. This creates a sustained procurement challenge for facilities operating legacy S7-300 installations that cannot justify a full control system migration.
S7-300 modules present specific testing requirements due to their backplane bus architecture and the diversity of communication interfaces across the product range. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to all S7-300 inventory:
