Siemens SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Architecture

The 6SE70 platform was introduced in the early 1990s as a successor to the SIMOVERT P and SIMOVERT F families. Its core innovation was the separation of the power section from the control electronics, enabling field replacement of the CU (Control Unit) board without disturbing the power stack — a maintenance advantage that remains relevant today.

Early variants used the CUVC (Control Unit Vector Control) and CUMC (Control Unit Motion Control) boards, communicating via the internal SST (Serial System Bus). Mid-generation revisions introduced PROFIBUS-DP integration through the CBP2 option board, aligning the platform with the emerging fieldbus standards of the late 1990s. Later firmware releases (from V3.x onward) added enhanced diagnostic logging and fault memory depth, improving maintainability in distributed plant architectures.

Siemens formally transitioned the 6SE70 line to limited support status as the SINAMICS S120 platform matured. However, direct migration from MASTERDRIVES to SINAMICS requires mechanical re-engineering of the cabinet, re-parameterization of all drive functions, and in many cases, PLC program modifications to accommodate changed telegram structures. For facilities running Siemens S5 or early S7-300 controllers as the supervisory layer, this migration cost routinely exceeds the value of maintaining the existing 6SE70 hardware with quality spare parts.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Parts

For facilities managing a fleet of MASTERDRIVES cabinets, we recommend a structured spare parts holding strategy: one CUVC board per five operational drives, one CBP2 per PROFIBUS segment, and at minimum one matched compact inverter module per critical process line. This approach has demonstrably extended operational continuity by 5–10 years beyond the point at which standard procurement channels close.

Quality Control for the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Range

The 6SE70 platform presents specific failure modes that require targeted inspection protocols. Our QC process for this series addresses the following known degradation patterns:

  • Electrolytic capacitor aging: DC bus capacitors in compact inverter modules are inspected for ESR drift and capacitance loss. Units with capacitors exceeding 20% capacitance reduction are recapped before dispatch.
  • CUVC firmware version verification: Control unit firmware is read and documented. Mismatched firmware versions between CUVC and option boards are a known source of intermittent faults. All units are verified against the original parameter set where available.
  • Backplane connector inspection: The 6SE70 option board slot connectors are inspected under magnification for pin deformation and oxidation. Corroded contacts are treated and re-tested for signal integrity.
  • IGBT gate drive circuit check: Power modules undergo gate signal integrity testing to confirm switching behavior within specification before functional load testing.
  • Functional load test: Where test infrastructure permits, inverter modules are run under controlled load conditions to verify output voltage symmetry, current regulation, and fault response behavior.
