The 6SE70 platform was introduced in the early 1990s as a successor to the SIMOVERT P and SIMOVERT F families. Its core innovation was the separation of the power section from the control electronics, enabling field replacement of the CU (Control Unit) board without disturbing the power stack — a maintenance advantage that remains relevant today.
Early variants used the CUVC (Control Unit Vector Control) and CUMC (Control Unit Motion Control) boards, communicating via the internal SST (Serial System Bus). Mid-generation revisions introduced PROFIBUS-DP integration through the CBP2 option board, aligning the platform with the emerging fieldbus standards of the late 1990s. Later firmware releases (from V3.x onward) added enhanced diagnostic logging and fault memory depth, improving maintainability in distributed plant architectures.
Siemens formally transitioned the 6SE70 line to limited support status as the SINAMICS S120 platform matured. However, direct migration from MASTERDRIVES to SINAMICS requires mechanical re-engineering of the cabinet, re-parameterization of all drive functions, and in many cases, PLC program modifications to accommodate changed telegram structures.
