Technical Dossier
The Siemens Perfect Harmony series — commercially designated under the 6SR ordering prefix and the SINAMICS GH180 platform — is a cell-based, cascaded H-bridge (CHB) medium voltage (MV) variable frequency drive (VFD) system. It operates across voltage classes from 2.3 kV to 13.8 kV and power ratings from 150 kW to beyond 100 MW. The architecture is deployed globally in continuous-process heavy industries: petrochemical refineries, LNG compression trains, nuclear and thermal power station auxiliary drives, offshore platform topside motors, cement kiln drives, and desalination pump stations. Its cell-bypass fault-tolerance capability — allowing continued operation at reduced voltage with one or more failed power cells — is the primary reason it remains the reference design for critical, non-interruptible motor loads. The 6SR series has accumulated multi-decade installed base across North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, with active units still in service from early 2000s installations.
The Perfect Harmony topology was originally developed by Robicon Corporation in the early 1990s as a patented multi-level CHB inverter. Siemens acquired Robicon in 2005 and integrated the product line into its SINAMICS portfolio, rebranding it as the SINAMICS GH180 while retaining the Perfect Harmony commercial name for legacy installed base continuity. The ordering system transitioned from early Robicon part numbers to the Siemens 6SR prefix structure.
Generation 1 (Robicon era, ~1993–2005): Analog-dominant control boards, proprietary fiber-optic cell communication, limited fieldbus integration. Spare parts from this era are now fully obsolete at OEM level.
Generation 2 (Siemens integration, 2005–2012): Introduction of the 6SR19xx and 6SR24xx control board families. PROFIBUS DP integration. Cell bypass relay boards standardized. Compatibility with legacy Robicon mechanical frames retained.
Generation 3 (GH180 platform, 2012–present): 6SR49xx series control and interface boards. PROFINET IO support. Enhanced diagnostics via SINAMICS Startdrive. The 6SR4902-0AH00-0AM1 (A5E36524726) belongs to this generation as a control interface / communication board assembly. This generation introduced modular firmware architecture, enabling remote parameter backup and drive cloning — critical for multi-drive installations in refineries and power plants.
Compatibility note: Generation 3 control boards are not backward-compatible with Generation 1 mechanical frames without adapter kits. Procurement teams must verify the drive's nameplate generation before ordering replacement boards.

For procurement engineers managing aging MV drive fleets, DriveKNMS provides: (1) cross-reference matching between legacy Robicon part numbers and current 6SR ordering codes; (2) board-level repair and component replacement for control boards where OEM replacement is unavailable; (3) functional equivalency assessment for inter-generation substitutions; (4) emergency same-week dispatch for critical plant shutdown scenarios. All sourced units are documented with traceability records including origin plant, removal date, and pre-shipment test results.
The 6SR series presents specific test challenges due to its multi-board control architecture and fiber-optic cell communication infrastructure. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 6SR control and power boards prior to dispatch:
