The Triconex Tricon platform is a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that has achieved dominant installed-base status across global heavy industry. Deployed in hydrocarbon processing facilities, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and chemical complexes, the Tricon architecture executes safety logic at SIL 3 (IEC 61511) with hardware fault tolerance of 2 (HFT=2). The DO 3401 is a 32-channel digital output module operating within this TMR backplane environment, providing relay-equivalent discrete output capability for ESD and F&G applications. Its continued presence in brownfield plants across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and North America makes it one of the most actively sourced spare parts in the Triconex catalog.
The Triconex Tricon system was introduced in the late 1980s as one of the first commercially available TMR programmable safety controllers. Its architecture evolved through several distinct generations:
Generation 1 (Tricon v1–v7, 1988–1998): Original chassis-based TMR design with proprietary backplane bus. Modules from this era used parallel redundant I/O scanning. Many sites still operate Gen 1 hardware under extended lifecycle agreements.
Generation 2 (Tricon v8–v9, 1998–2008): Introduction of the Enhanced Intelligent Module (EIM) architecture. Improved diagnostics, faster scan rates, and expanded I/O density. The DO 3401 belongs to this generation family. Backward compatibility with Gen 1 chassis was maintained for most I/O modules.
Generation 3 (Tricon CX, 2008–present): Transition to the Tricon CX platform with Ethernet-based communication, IEC 61508 SIL 3 certification, and integration with Triconex Safety Manager (TSM). The Tricon CX introduced the 3000 series module numbering convention. Legacy 3401-series modules are not directly interchangeable with Tricon CX equivalents without chassis and firmware migration.
Compatibility note: DO 3401 modules are compatible with Tricon chassis models 3700A, 3700E, and 3706A. They are not compatible with Tricon CX chassis without a full system migration project.

Triconex formally transitioned its primary product line to the Tricon CX platform beginning in 2008. As a result, the majority of 3000-series modules — including the DO 3401 — are classified as End-of-Life (EOL) by the OEM. Schneider Electric (which acquired Triconex in 2014) provides limited legacy support under its Lifecycle Extension Program, but new-manufacture replacement units are no longer available through standard distribution channels.
