The Evolution of WDPF Architecture

The WDPF platform evolved through three distinct architectural generations. The original WDPF I (circa 1983–1991) used a proprietary WEStation bus with parallel backplane addressing, supporting up to 32 I/O modules per drop. Compatibility between WDPF I and WDPF II modules is limited to specific bridge adapters; direct substitution is not supported without engineering review. WDPF II (1991–2002) introduced the WDPF Data Highway (W-DH) serial communication backbone, enabling multi-drop configurations across plant-wide networks. Power supply modules in this generation, including the 3A99220G01, were designed to deliver regulated DC bus voltage to the backplane with built-in over-current and over-voltage protection. WDPF+ (2002–2012) extended the platform with Ethernet gateway modules and OPC server integration, allowing WDPF field I/O to interface with modern SCADA and historian systems. Westinghouse's acquisition by Emerson and subsequent rebranding to Ovation DCS marked the formal end-of-life announcement for WDPF hardware production, though third-party MRO suppliers continue to support the installed base with tested surplus and refurbished modules.
