YASKAWA PG Card Series Technical Notes

The YASKAWA PG Card (Pulse Generator feedback card) series is a family of encoder interface option cards designed for installation into YASKAWA variable frequency drives (VFDs), including the G5, G7, F7, E7, P7, and VS-616 series inverters. These modules provide closed-loop vector control by feeding encoder pulse signals back to the drive's control board, enabling precise speed and torque regulation. Across global heavy industry — petrochemical plants, nuclear auxiliary systems, offshore platforms, steel rolling mills, and refinery compressor trains — YASKAWA PG Cards are embedded in critical motion control infrastructure. Their long service life and the continued operation of legacy YASKAWA drive platforms make these cards among the most consistently sourced spare parts in the industrial automation aftermarket.

The Evolution of PG Card Architecture

YASKAWA introduced PG feedback option cards alongside the expansion of its closed-loop vector drive platforms in the late 1980s and through the 1990s. Early variants such as the PG-B1 and PG-X1 were designed for single-ended and differential encoder inputs respectively, targeting the VS-616 and CIMR-G5 platforms. As drive architecture evolved through the G7 and F7 generations (introduced in the early 2000s), YASKAWA refined the PG card interface to support higher pulse resolutions, improved noise immunity, and dual-channel configurations. The PG-B2, PG-X2, and PG-W2 variants introduced compatibility with 12V and 15V encoder power supplies and expanded the maximum input frequency ceiling. The PG-Z2 and PG-RT1 cards addressed specialized requirements including resolver feedback and high-resolution absolute encoder interfaces. By the mid-2010s, the A1000 and L1000A platforms introduced next-generation PG-X3 and PG-B3 cards with enhanced EMC shielding and support for EnDat and Hiperface encoder protocols. Legacy PG-B1 and PG-X1 cards, including the 73600-A0024 PG-B1, are now in the mature-to-end-of-life phase. YASKAWA no longer manufactures these parts through standard channels, making aftermarket sourcing and lifecycle extension support essential for plant operators maintaining older drive fleets.
