Technical Dossier
The Yokogawa ADV142 series is a family of digital input (DI) modules deployed within the CENTUM VP Distributed Control System (DCS) platform. CENTUM VP is Yokogawa's flagship integrated production control system, with a global installed base spanning petrochemical complexes, LNG terminals, nuclear power facilities, offshore platforms, and continuous process refineries. The ADV142 series occupies the field I/O layer of the CENTUM VP architecture, interfacing field-level discrete signals with the system's Field Control Station (FCS). These modules are engineered for high-density, high-reliability discrete signal acquisition in environments where process uptime is measured in years, not hours. Their compact form factor and standardized backplane interface make them a long-term fixture in facilities that cannot afford unplanned shutdowns for hardware migration.
The ADV142 series traces its lineage to Yokogawa's earlier CENTUM CS 3000 platform, where equivalent DI modules established the backplane communication protocols and signal conditioning standards that persist in CENTUM VP. The transition from CS 3000 to CENTUM VP introduced enhanced diagnostics, improved EMC tolerance, and tighter integration with the Vnet/IP control network. ADV142 modules communicate over the ESB (Expanded Signal Bus) backplane, which supports hot-swap replacement without process interruption — a critical requirement in continuous-operation facilities. Early ADV142 variants supported 16-point DI at 24 VDC; subsequent suffix variants (P10, P50, P60) introduced isolated input configurations, extended voltage ranges, and NAMUR-compatible sensor interfaces for hazardous area applications. The series is now in its mature lifecycle phase. Yokogawa continues to supply and support ADV142 modules, but new greenfield projects increasingly specify the CENTUM VP R6 platform with next-generation I/O modules. For existing installations, ADV142 remains the correct replacement part and is fully supported under Yokogawa's long-term maintenance program.
