Technical Dossier
The Yokogawa AIP Series constitutes the primary bus interface and I/O signal processing layer within the CENTUM CS and CENTUM VP Distributed Control Systems — two of the most widely deployed DCS platforms in global heavy industry. Installations span continuous-process environments including petroleum refining, petrochemical complexes, LNG terminals, nuclear power generation auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale chemical manufacturing. The AIP series modules are mounted on Field Control Station (FCS) node units and serve as the physical and logical bridge between the V-net/Vnet-IP control network and field instrumentation. Their role is non-redundant in function: a failed AIP module directly impacts loop control, making spare parts availability a critical operational parameter for plant maintenance engineers.
The AIP designation was introduced alongside the CENTUM CS platform in the mid-1990s as Yokogawa transitioned from proprietary BRAIN bus architectures to a more modular, rack-based I/O philosophy. Early AIP modules (AIP171–AIP182 range) were designed for the CENTUM CS 1000/3000 FCS hardware, operating on the ESB (Expanded Signal Bus) backplane. These modules communicated via a parallel bus structure with strict slot-position dependencies — a constraint that required exact replacement with the same model number during maintenance.
With the introduction of CENTUM VP (circa 2008), Yokogawa extended AIP series compatibility through firmware revisions and introduced the AIP5xx sub-series to support enhanced I/O density and Vnet-IP dual-redundant Ethernet control networking. The AIP8xx sub-series further addressed high-channel-count applications and integration with FOUNDATION Fieldbus and HART pass-through configurations. Backward compatibility between CS and VP hardware generations is partial: AIP1xx modules can operate in VP FCS racks under specific firmware conditions, but AIP5xx and AIP8xx modules are not backward-compatible with CS 1000/3000 hardware. This generational boundary is the primary driver of obsolescence-related procurement challenges.
