Technical Dossier
The Yokogawa ATA4S series is a family of analog terminal adapter modules deployed across heavy industrial installations worldwide, including petrochemical complexes, nuclear power facilities, oil refineries, and large-scale chemical processing plants. These modules function as the field-side signal conditioning and termination interface within Yokogawa's CENTUM Distributed Control System (DCS) architecture. Their primary function is to receive 4–20 mA analog signals from field instruments—transmitters, positioners, and sensors—and route them to the I/O bus for processing by the CENTUM controller. The ATA4S-00 S2 specifically operates on the S2 bus standard, making it a direct-fit replacement and maintenance component for CENTUM CS 3000 and CENTUM VP installations running the S2 I/O bus topology. Given the decades-long operational lifespan of DCS infrastructure in these industries, the ATA4S series remains in active demand for both corrective maintenance and lifecycle extension programs.
The ATA4S lineage traces to Yokogawa's CENTUM CS platform, introduced in the early 1990s as one of the first fully digital DCS architectures with redundant I/O bus capability. The original CENTUM CS used a proprietary ESB (Enhanced Serial Bus) for I/O communication. As the platform evolved into CENTUM CS 1000 and subsequently CENTUM CS 3000 (released 1998), Yokogawa introduced S1 and S2 bus variants to support higher-density I/O configurations and improved noise immunity in harsh plant environments.

Yokogawa officially transitioned CENTUM CS 3000 to limited support status, with end-of-life announced for certain hardware sub-assemblies. However, the installed base of CS 3000 and early CENTUM VP systems in refineries and chemical plants means ATA4S-series terminal adapters will remain in active maintenance demand for 10 to 20 additional years beyond the manufacturer's support window.
The ATA4S series modules incorporate a multi-layer PCB backplane with proprietary Yokogawa bus connectors. Standard visual inspection is insufficient to verify functional integrity. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol for all ATA4S units prior to shipment:
All test results are logged and supplied with each unit as part of the shipment documentation package.
