YOKOGAWA NFDV Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of NFDV Series Architecture

The NFDV module family was introduced as part of YOKOGAWA's transition from the legacy CENTUM CS 3000 platform to the CENTUM VP architecture, which adopted Vnet/IP (a deterministic, dual-redundant Ethernet-based control network) as its backbone. Early CENTUM CS 3000 I/O relied on the FCS (Field Control Station) bus with modules designated under the AMN/ADV/ADM naming conventions. The NFDV series replaced these with a standardized form factor compatible with the AFV10D/AFV20D Field Control Units (FCUs), enabling higher channel density and improved diagnostic transparency.

The architecture uses a dual-redundant I/O bus within the node unit, allowing individual module replacement without process interruption. NFDV modules communicate via the RIO (Remote I/O) bus to the FCU, with the FCU itself connected to the plant-wide Vnet/IP ring. This layered redundancy model is the primary reason NFDV-equipped systems remain in service well beyond their original design life — replacement modules must be sourced from the secondary market as YOKOGAWA has transitioned active development toward the CENTUM VP R6 platform and the newer Exaopc/OPC-UA integration layer.

Compatibility note: NFDV modules are not interchangeable with the older ADVM or ADMV series without FCU firmware validation. Cross-generation substitution requires confirmation of node unit hardware revision and I/O bus protocol version.

Quality Control for the NFDV Series Range

NFDV modules incorporate a dual-bus backplane architecture and onboard diagnostic ASICs that require specialized test procedures beyond standard power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all NFDV modules prior to shipment:
