The CENTUM CS and CS3000 platforms were the backbone of process automation across petrochemical, power generation, pulp and paper, and pharmaceutical facilities throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Yokogawa's engineering at that time was built for 20-year operational cycles — and many of these systems are still running well past that horizon.
The PW501 S1 sits at the power distribution layer of the CENTUM CS3000 field control station. A failure at this layer does not produce a graceful degradation — it produces a hard shutdown of the affected FCS node. Depending on the redundancy architecture of the installation, this can mean loss of control over an entire process segment.
Yokogawa's current CENTUM VP platform is not backward-compatible with CS3000 hardware at the module level.
