The Yokogawa SAI143 series is a family of analog current input modules deployed within the CENTUM VP and CS 3000 distributed control systems (DCS). These modules are installed across critical process industries including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, offshore platforms, and large-scale chemical plants. The SAI143 series handles 4–20 mA analog signal acquisition from field transmitters, converting process variables into digital values for the DCS controller. Its modular architecture, high channel density, and compatibility with Yokogawa's Field Control Station (FCS) infrastructure have made it a standard component in long-lifecycle plant automation projects worldwide. Installed base counts in the tens of thousands of nodes globally, with many facilities operating these modules beyond their original design life due to the stability and reliability of the CENTUM platform.

The Evolution of SAI143 Architecture

The SAI143 series was introduced as part of Yokogawa's CENTUM CS 3000 platform in the late 1990s, replacing earlier analog input architectures that required individual signal conditioning per channel. The original SAI143 modules used a multiplexed A/D conversion architecture with 16-bit resolution, enabling multi-channel acquisition within a single slot of the Field Control Unit (FCU) nest. As the platform transitioned to CENTUM VP in the mid-2000s, the SAI143 series was carried forward with backward-compatible backplane pinouts, allowing direct module substitution without rewiring. Suffix variants (e.g., -S31) were introduced to indicate HART communication capability, enabling digital superimposition over the 4–20 mA loop for device diagnostics and parameterization. The series entered its mature phase with the widespread adoption of CENTUM VP R6, and Yokogawa has since positioned the CENTUM VP Vnet/IP architecture as the long-term successor. However, the SAI143 remains in active production support and spare parts availability, as the installed base at brownfield sites makes full migration economically prohibitive for most operators.
