Technical Dossier
The Schneider Electric XBTGT series, marketed under the Magelis brand, represents one of the most widely deployed human-machine interface (HMI) product lines in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power facilities, offshore platforms, and continuous-process refineries, the XBTGT range provides operator visualization and control interfacing for Modicon PLC architectures and third-party automation systems. Its penetration in critical infrastructure is attributable to its compatibility with CANopen, Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, and Uni-Telway protocols, enabling integration into both legacy and modern distributed control system (DCS) environments. The series spans display sizes from 3.5" to 15", with resistive and analog-resistive touchscreen variants, and supports both portrait and landscape panel mounting configurations.
The XBTGT series succeeded the earlier XBT-F and XBT-N ranges, which relied on proprietary Uni-Telway serial communication and had limited graphical capability. The XBTGT generation introduced a Linux-based embedded OS, enabling multi-protocol Ethernet connectivity and the Vijeo Designer configuration software environment. Early XBTGT units (circa 2005–2010) used compact flash storage and VGA-resolution displays; mid-generation units introduced WVGA (800×480) panels with USB host ports for project transfer and data logging. Later revisions added SD card slots and improved EMC shielding for use in high-interference environments such as variable frequency drive (VFD) cabinets. The series entered its mature/end-of-active-production phase approximately 2018–2022, with Schneider Electric transitioning customers toward the HMIGTO and HMISCU series. However, the installed base of XBTGT units in operational plants remains substantial, and replacement demand for maintenance and lifecycle extension continues across all major industrial regions.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for end-of-life and hard-to-source Schneider Electric XBTGT modules. As Schneider Electric has formally discontinued active production of the majority of XBTGT SKUs, procurement through standard distribution channels is no longer reliable. DriveKNMS sources units through certified secondary market channels, including decommissioned plant equipment, factory-sealed surplus stock, and tested pull inventory from controlled shutdowns. All units are catalogued by firmware revision and hardware revision code to ensure compatibility with existing Vijeo Designer project files. For plants operating XBTGT panels beyond their published end-of-support date, DriveKNMS provides direct replacement units with matched hardware revisions to eliminate re-commissioning requirements. Customers requiring multiple units for critical spares programs are accommodated with volume sourcing and consolidated shipment options.
The XBTGT series presents specific technical challenges during refurbishment and testing due to its multi-layer backplane communication architecture and touchscreen calibration dependencies. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all XBTGT units prior to dispatch. Each unit undergoes power-on verification at rated input voltage (24VDC), display uniformity inspection across the full active area, and touchscreen linearity calibration using a standardized grid pattern. Communication ports — including Ethernet RJ45, USB host, CANopen DB9, and serial RS-232/RS-485 — are individually verified using protocol-specific test equipment. Units with compact flash or SD card slots are tested for read/write integrity. Firmware version is recorded and documented with each shipment. Units that fail any single test parameter are quarantined and not released for sale. Final inspection includes visual examination of the bezel, connector housings, and rear panel labeling for completeness and legibility.
