ICS Triplex T9310 Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The ICS Triplex T9310 series is a fault-tolerant backplane and I/O expansion platform developed for safety-critical continuous process industries. Deployed extensively in petrochemical complexes, offshore oil and gas platforms, nuclear power generation facilities, and refinery distributed control systems (DCS), the T9310 architecture forms the physical backbone of the Trusted® TMR (Triple Modular Redundancy) control system. Each backplane in this series provides the passive interconnect infrastructure through which processor, I/O, and communication modules exchange data across three independent voting channels. The T9310 series is certified to IEC 61508 SIL 3 and is recognized as a long-lifecycle platform, with installed base units still in active service across facilities commissioned in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Evolution of T9310 Architecture

The T9310 backplane series was introduced as part of ICS Triplex's second-generation Trusted® platform, succeeding earlier single-channel architectures with a fully triplicated bus design. Each backplane slot independently routes power, data, and voting signals across three isolated channels (A, B, C), ensuring that a single-channel fault does not propagate to the system vote. Early T9310 variants supported a fixed slot count with limited expansion capability. Subsequent revisions introduced the expansion backplane concept — of which the T9310-02 is the primary representative — allowing engineers to extend the I/O node count beyond the base chassis without introducing new communication latency. The T9310 architecture uses a proprietary parallel backplane bus rather than a serial fieldbus, which distinguishes it from later platforms such as the T9100 series. Compatibility between T9310 backplanes and T9300-series processor modules is maintained across hardware revisions, though firmware alignment between the chassis controller and expansion backplane is required. As ICS Triplex (now part of Rockwell Automation's safety portfolio) has transitioned its active development to the Trusted® T9100 and AADvance® platforms, the T9310 series has entered a mature/end-of-active-production lifecycle. Long-term maintenance support, spare parts sourcing, and repair services are now the primary operational requirement for the global installed base.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete T9310 Parts

The T9310 series has been classified as end-of-active-production by ICS Triplex / Rockwell Automation. OEM new-stock availability is limited or discontinued for most SKUs in this range. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of T9310 backplanes, processor modules, and I/O cards sourced from decommissioned systems, controlled-environment warehouses, and verified surplus channels. All units are catalogued by hardware revision and firmware version to ensure compatibility with the target system configuration. For facilities operating under long-term service agreements or planning a phased migration to T9100 or AADvance® platforms, DriveKNMS provides bridge-stock support to maintain system availability during the transition window. Requests for specific revision levels, date codes, or matched-pair power supply units are accommodated. Lead times for hard-to-find T9310 variants are typically 3–10 business days depending on stock position.

Quality Control for the T9310 Range

T9310 backplane modules present specific test challenges due to their passive bus architecture and the requirement to maintain channel isolation across all three TMR lanes. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to all T9310 units prior to dispatch: visual inspection of backplane connector pins and PCB traces for oxidation, mechanical damage, or cold-solder joints; continuity and isolation testing across all three channel buses (A, B, C) using calibrated LCR and insulation resistance meters; functional slot verification using a reference Trusted® chassis loaded with known-good processor and I/O modules; and burn-in cycling under load to confirm thermal stability of the backplane power distribution rails. For T9310-02 expansion backplanes specifically, the inter-chassis ribbon cable interface and expansion bus handshake signals are tested against a base T9310-01 chassis to confirm correct slot addressing and channel synchronization. All test records are retained and available upon request.
