Technical Dossier
The WAGO 280 series represents one of the most widely deployed DIN-rail feed-through terminal block families in global heavy industry. Installed across chemical processing plants, oil refineries, nuclear power facilities, and offshore platforms, the 280 series is recognized for its cage clamp connection technology, which eliminates the need for ferrules and delivers consistent contact force over decades of service. Its compact pitch (5 mm and 6 mm variants) and high current ratings (up to 32 A) make it a default specification in European and Asian industrial panel builds. The series is manufactured in Germany under WAGO's ISO 9001-certified production standards and carries UL, CSA, and ATEX approvals relevant to hazardous-area installations.
WAGO introduced the 280 series as part of its second-generation cage clamp terminal block platform, succeeding the earlier 261 and 264 series. The core innovation was the self-locking cage clamp mechanism, which applies a defined spring force to the conductor without requiring a separate clamping screw. This design reduced installation time by approximately 50% compared to screw-type terminals and eliminated the torque-related failures common in vibration-intensive environments.
Early 280-series variants (280-901 through 280-910) addressed single-conductor feed-through applications in 2.5 mm² and 4 mm² wire gauges. Subsequent revisions introduced ground (PE) variants with integrated DIN-rail bonding, fused disconnect versions for branch circuit protection, and multi-level configurations for high-density wiring. The series is now considered mature; WAGO's current active development is concentrated on the 2002, 2004, and 221 Compact Splicing Connector families. However, the 280 series remains in full production and is supported with a committed 10-year spare parts availability guarantee, making it the preferred choice for long-lifecycle plant maintenance programs where panel re-engineering is not economically viable.
Compatibility note: 280-series terminal blocks mount on standard 35 mm DIN rail (EN 60715) and are mechanically compatible with WAGO 281 and 282 series accessories including end brackets (280-311), partition plates (280-312), and test plugs (280-313). They are not electrically or mechanically interchangeable with the 2002 or 2004 series without panel modification.
The following SKUs represent the core production range of the WAGO 280 series. All models use cage clamp termination unless otherwise noted.

Although the WAGO 280 series remains in active production, specific color variants, fused configurations, and regional approval variants (e.g., UL-listed sub-variants for North American panels) are frequently subject to extended lead times from distribution channels. Plants operating under IEC 61511 functional safety requirements or NRC-regulated maintenance programs cannot substitute terminal block models without formal engineering change orders, making exact-match sourcing a non-negotiable requirement.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of WAGO 280 series terminal blocks, including low-volume and color-specific variants that are not stocked by general-line distributors. Our sourcing network covers authorized WAGO distribution channels in Germany, China, and Southeast Asia, enabling us to fulfill both single-unit maintenance orders and bulk panel-build quantities. For discontinued sub-variants, we provide traceable stock with original WAGO packaging and date codes, supporting plant documentation requirements for regulated industries.
Each WAGO 280 series unit processed through DriveKNMS undergoes the following verification steps before dispatch:
For bulk orders exceeding 500 units, a statistical sampling inspection per ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 AQL 1.0 is applied, with full test reports available on request.
