ABB SMB Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The ABB SMB (Serial Measurement Board) is a core feedback and measurement interface module deployed across ABB's IRC5 and OmniCore robot controller platforms. It is installed in high-density industrial environments including automotive body-in-white lines, chemical processing facilities, nuclear material handling cells, and offshore oil & gas automation systems. The SMB board manages resolver-based position feedback, battery-backed axis calibration data storage, and serial communication between the robot's drive system and the main computer unit. Its role is safety-critical: loss of SMB function results in immediate axis position loss and robot shutdown. Global installed base spans hundreds of thousands of IRC5 controllers across ABB's IRB 1200, IRB 2600, IRB 4600, IRB 6700, and IRB 7600 robot families.

The Evolution of SMB Architecture

The SMB architecture was introduced with the IRC5 single-cabinet controller (launched 2004) as a replacement for the analog resolver interface cards used in the S4C+ generation. Early SMB revisions (3HAC025562-001, 3HAC026253-001) used a parallel bus topology with limited axis count support (up to 6 axes). From approximately 2010 onward, ABB transitioned to a serial daisy-chain topology, enabling support for up to 9 axes on a single SMB chain, which became standard for the IRB 6700 and IRB 7600 families. The 3HAC043904-001 revision introduced improved EMC shielding and a revised battery connector interface compatible with the 3HAC044168-001 battery unit, addressing field failures observed in high-vibration environments. Compatibility between SMB hardware revisions and RobotWare versions is strictly version-controlled; substituting an incorrect revision without firmware alignment will trigger a SMB communication fault (error code 50024). As of 2026, the IRC5 platform is in its mature/sustaining phase, with OmniCore (DSQC 2000-series) designated as the strategic successor. Long-term maintenance support for IRC5 SMB modules remains active through ABB's Extended Lifecycle program and through independent distributors such as DriveKNMS.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete SMB Parts

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for IRC5-generation SMB modules, including revisions that ABB has classified as Last Time Buy (LTB) or End of Life (EOL). For facilities operating legacy IRC5 fleets with no near-term migration budget, DriveKNMS provides: verified surplus stock sourced from decommissioned production lines, functional testing against ABB's SMB communication protocol specifications, and cross-revision compatibility assessment prior to shipment. For obsolete early-revision SMBs (3HAC025562-001, 3HAC026253-001), DriveKNMS can supply tested pull-out units with documented operational history. Minimum lead time for in-stock items is 1–3 business days. For items requiring sourcing, standard lead time is 7–21 business days depending on global availability.

Quality Control for the SMB Range

SMB modules present specific test challenges due to their dual function as both a communication interface and a safety-critical data storage device. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all SMB units prior to dispatch: (1) Visual inspection of resolver connector pins, battery connector, and PCB for corrosion, cracked solder joints, or capacitor bulge. (2) Powered bench test using an IRC5 controller test rig to verify SMB serial communication link establishment and axis data read/write integrity. (3) Battery voltage verification: SMB backup battery must read ≥3.0V; units below threshold are supplied with a new battery pre-installed. (4) Calibration data retention test: the unit is powered down for a minimum of 2 hours and re-interrogated to confirm non-volatile memory retention. (5) Final firmware revision logging: hardware revision and compatible RobotWare version range are documented on the shipment certificate.
