Technical Dossier
The SLC 500 platform was introduced in 1991 as a successor to the SLC 100 and SLC 150 fixed-format controllers. The original 1747-L511 and 1747-L514 processors used a proprietary DH-485 serial network for peer-to-peer communication. The 1747-L532 and 1747-L541 mid-range processors introduced expanded data table capacity and support for the Data Highway Plus (DH+) protocol via the 1747-KE or 1747-KFC15 communication interface modules.
The third-generation processors—1747-L551, 1747-L552, and 1747-L553—added native DH+ port integration and expanded program memory to 64K words. The introduction of the 1747-AENTR EtherNet/IP adapter in the 2000s marked the platform's integration into modern Ethernet-based control architectures, allowing SLC 500 racks to participate in Logix-based EtherNet/IP networks without processor replacement. This bridging capability extended the operational life of legacy installations by a decade or more.
Rockwell Automation announced end-of-life for the SLC 500 processor family in 2012, with last-time-buy periods concluding by 2015. The recommended migration path is to the Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1500 or CompactLogix L3x series. However, due to the cost and complexity of full system migration in continuous-process industries, the SLC 500 platform remains in production service at a significant proportion of installed sites.

Power Supply Modules (1746 Series)
SLC 500 modules present specific test challenges due to their backplane communication architecture. The 1746 chassis backplane operates at a proprietary parallel bus protocol; any module with degraded backplane interface logic will pass basic power-on tests but fail under live scan cycle conditions. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all SLC 500 modules prior to shipment:
