Technical Dossier
The Allen-Bradley 1771 I/O system is the foundational input/output platform for the Rockwell Automation PLC-5 programmable controller family. Deployed across heavy industrial sectors — including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, offshore oil platforms, pulp and paper mills, and continuous-process chemical plants — the 1771 backplane architecture has accumulated decades of installed base globally. Its modular slot-based design, housed in 1771-series I/O chassis, allows mixed analog and digital module configurations within a single rack. Despite the PLC-5 platform reaching end-of-life status, the 1771 I/O system remains operational in thousands of legacy installations where full migration to ControlLogix or CompactLogix is deferred due to capital cost, process criticality, or regulatory freeze requirements.
The 1771 I/O platform was introduced alongside the PLC-5 processor family in the early 1980s. The original architecture used a parallel backplane bus operating at TTL logic levels, with modules communicating via a proprietary Allen-Bradley I/O link protocol. Early revisions (Series A and B) established the physical form factor: single-slot and double-slot modules with a 40-pin edge connector interface to the 1771 chassis backplane.
Through the 1990s, Rockwell expanded the catalog to include enhanced analog modules with 12-bit and 16-bit resolution, high-speed counter modules, and specialty thermocouple/RTD input cards. The /B and /C revision suffixes denote incremental hardware changes — typically improved noise immunity, revised firmware, or component substitutions — while maintaining backward compatibility with the same chassis slot and software configuration blocks.

Communication & Specialty Modules
For the 1771-IFE/B specifically, DriveKNMS stocks tested units with full functional verification against the original Rockwell specification. Each unit is inspected for backplane connector integrity, EEPROM configuration retention, and channel-level analog accuracy prior to shipment. Customers operating PLC-5 systems in regulated industries (pharmaceutical, nuclear, refining) can request full traceability documentation including test records and visual inspection reports.
The 1771 backplane uses a parallel bus architecture with edge-connector termination. Connector oxidation and pin wear are the primary failure modes for modules removed and reinserted multiple times. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 1771 modules:
