Technical Dossier
ABB's IRB gearbox architecture has evolved through three distinct mechanical generations since the early 1990s. The first generation, associated with the S4 controller platform, used single-stage helical reduction units with grease-packed sealed bearings rated for 20,000-hour service intervals. These units were non-field-serviceable and required complete exchange at end-of-life.
The second generation, introduced alongside the S4C and S4C+ controllers in the late 1990s and early 2000s, transitioned to multi-stage planetary and helical-bevel hybrid designs. This generation introduced the modular axis-specific gearbox concept, where each robot axis (J1 through J6) carries a discrete gearbox assembly with its own reduction ratio, torque rating, and mounting interface. The 3HAC021724-001 and 3HAC021455-001 belong to this generation.
The third generation, aligned with the IRC5 controller and the IRB460 palletizing platform, introduced sealed-for-life lubrication systems and improved backlash compensation. The 3HAC040499-001 is representative of this architecture. Compatibility between generations is axis-specific and must be verified against the robot's mechanical revision level before substitution. Cross-generation swaps without firmware and mechanical recalibration will result in path accuracy degradation and potential axis overload faults.
The following index covers confirmed ABB IRB series gearbox and drive-train spare part numbers. Each entry reflects a discrete, field-replaceable assembly. SKUs are organized by robot platform and axis position.

IRB series gearboxes present specific inspection challenges due to their multi-stage internal architecture and the precision tolerances required for robot path accuracy. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all units prior to dispatch:
