Technical Dossier
The ABB IRB6700 is a heavy-duty industrial robot platform deployed across global heavy industry sectors including automotive body-in-white assembly, chemical plant material handling, nuclear facility maintenance robotics, and refinery process automation. With a payload range from 150 kg to 300 kg and a reach envelope of 2.6 m to 3.2 m, the IRB6700 family represents ABB's flagship sixth-generation large-robot architecture. Its modular drive and motor design enables field-level component replacement without full arm disassembly, making spare parts availability a critical operational factor for plant maintenance teams worldwide.
The IRB6700 platform succeeded the IRB6640 and IRB6650S lines, inheriting their mechanical footprint while introducing a redesigned motor controller interface, updated axis computer architecture, and improved IP67-rated joint sealing. Units in this series are installed in tens of thousands of production cells globally, with a service life expectation exceeding 15 years under standard duty cycles.
The IRB6700 was introduced in 2013 as a direct replacement for the IRB6640 series. Its architecture is built around the IRC5 controller platform, using the DSQC series drive modules and the 3HAC-prefixed motor and mechanical unit part numbering system. Early production units (2013–2016) used first-generation axis computer boards (DSQC1000) and motor feedback encoders with 17-bit resolution. From 2017 onward, ABB transitioned to 23-bit multi-turn encoders on axis 1–3 motors, improving positioning repeatability to ±0.05 mm.
The following SKUs represent verified components within the ABB IRB6700 mechanical and drive ecosystem. Each entry reflects a distinct functional role within the robot's axis drive train or control architecture.

IRB6700 motors and gearbox units undergo a structured test protocol prior to dispatch. AC servo motors are bench-tested under no-load and rated-load conditions using an ABB-compatible drive emulator, verifying phase resistance balance (tolerance ±2%), insulation resistance (minimum 100 MΩ at 500 VDC), and encoder signal integrity across the full 360° rotation range. Gearbox units are inspected for backlash within ABB's published tolerance band and pressure-tested for seal integrity at 0.5 bar.
