Technical Dossier
ABB's process wrist design has evolved across three distinct mechanical generations since the mid-1990s. The first generation, represented by part numbers such as 3HAC17327-1 (IRB2400 series), used a three-axis hollow-wrist design with integrated cable routing for process media — welding wire, air lines, and signal cables — passing through the wrist body. This architecture reduced external cable wear and enabled tighter path repeatability in arc welding applications.
The second generation introduced modular gear cartridge replacement, reducing mean time to repair (MTTR). Part numbers such as 3HAC037835-001 (IRB660 / IRB6600 / IRB6650) reflect this design philosophy, with standardized bolt patterns allowing field replacement without full arm disassembly. Compatibility between IRB6600 and IRB6650 wrist assemblies was maintained at the mechanical interface level, simplifying multi-robot fleet maintenance.
The third generation, exemplified by 3HAC049629-001 (IRB1520ID / IRB1200), integrates the Integrated Dressing (ID) concept — all process cables and hoses are fully routed inside the upper arm and wrist, eliminating external dressing entirely. This design is standard on collaborative and compact robot platforms where cable interference with workpieces is unacceptable. Backward compatibility with first-generation wrist interfaces does not exist; mounting flange dimensions and gear ratios differ across generations.
The following SKUs represent verified part numbers within the ABB IRB process wrist and associated wrist-axis mechanical component range. Each entry reflects a distinct assembly or sub-assembly with a defined robot platform scope.

Several wrist assemblies in the IRB2400 and early IRB6600 range have reached end-of-production status at ABB's factory. Part numbers including 3HAC14550-2 and 3HAC17327-1 (early production batches) are no longer manufactured as new units. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested surplus and refurbished wrist assemblies sourced from decommissioned robot lines, controlled dismantling programs, and authorized redistribution channels.
ABB process wrist assemblies present specific test challenges due to their multi-axis gear train, internal cable routing, and precision bearing preload requirements. DriveKNMS applies the following verification protocol to all wrist units prior to dispatch:
Backlash measurement: Axes 4, 5, and 6 are tested individually using a calibrated dial indicator fixture. Backlash values are compared against ABB's published tolerance tables for each robot model and payload class. Units exceeding tolerance are rejected or rebuilt.
Torque and drag test: Each axis is driven through its full range of motion under no-load conditions. Abnormal drag, binding, or torque spikes indicate bearing damage or gear contamination and trigger disassembly inspection.
Seal integrity check: Wrist housings are pressure-tested at 0.5 bar to verify IP67 sealing on all cable entry points and gear housing joints. Failed seals are replaced with OEM-specification gaskets.
Cable continuity verification: For integrated dressing wrist units (3HAC049629-001 and similar), all internal signal and power conductors are tested for continuity and insulation resistance before reassembly.
Dimensional inspection: Output flange flatness and tool mounting hole position are verified against ISO 9283 tolerances using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM).
