Technical Dossier
The ABB 5SHX series represents ABB's Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristor (IGCT) product line, engineered for high-power switching applications in heavy industrial environments. These devices are deployed globally in chemical processing plants, nuclear power stations, oil refineries, steel mills, and large-scale variable speed drives. The 5SHX series occupies a critical position in medium-to-high voltage power conversion systems, where reliability, switching precision, and thermal performance are non-negotiable. ABB's IGCT technology combines the low conduction losses of a GTO thyristor with the fast turn-off capability of a transistor, making the 5SHX series the preferred choice for multi-megawatt drive systems and STATCOM installations operating at voltage classes from 2.5 kV to 6.5 kV.
The 5SHX series evolved from ABB's earlier GTO (Gate Turn-Off Thyristor) technology platform. In the early 1990s, ABB pioneered the IGCT concept to address the limitations of GTOs — specifically their requirement for large, lossy snubber circuits and slow switching frequencies. The first-generation 5SHX devices introduced the integrated gate unit directly onto the thyristor housing, eliminating external gate drive inductance and enabling sub-microsecond turn-off times.
By the late 1990s and early 2000s, ABB refined the 5SHX architecture to support asymmetric (A-type) and reverse-conducting (RC-type) configurations, broadening the series' applicability to four-quadrant drive topologies and active front-end rectifiers. The 5SXE gate unit family was developed in parallel as the dedicated driver interface, with models such as the 5SXE10-0181 providing the gate signal conditioning, monitoring, and protection logic required for safe IGCT operation.
Modern installations using 5SHX devices are predominantly in the mature/sustaining phase of their lifecycle. ABB has transitioned new designs toward the HiPak IGBT module platform (5SNA series), but the installed base of 5SHX-based systems in power plants and industrial drives remains extensive, creating sustained demand for original spare parts and certified replacements through specialist distributors.

Associated Capacitor / Snubber Components
Press-pack IGCT devices present unique verification challenges compared to standard module-type semiconductors. The 5SHX series uses a clamped stack assembly where contact pressure directly affects forward voltage drop and thermal resistance. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 5SHX units prior to dispatch:
