ABB ACS-AP Series Technical Notes

The ABB ACS-AP series represents ABB's standardized human-machine interface (HMI) and control panel platform for the ACS drive family, including the ACS310, ACS355, ACS380, ACS480, ACS510, ACS550, ACS580, ACS800, and ACS880 variable frequency drive (VFD) lines. These panels are deployed across heavy industrial sectors globally — petrochemical refineries, nuclear auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, water treatment facilities, offshore platforms, and steel rolling mills — wherever ABB drives serve as the primary motor control infrastructure.

The ACS-AP keypad range provides parameter access, fault diagnostics, drive start/stop control, and real-time monitoring. Units in this series communicate with the drive via the DDCS (Distributed Drive Control System) or the drive's integrated panel bus, depending on the host drive generation. The series is characterized by its modular mounting compatibility: panels can be door-mounted, remote-mounted via extension cables (ACS-AP-W), or hand-held for commissioning use.

The Evolution of ACS-AP Architecture

ABB's drive HMI architecture has evolved through three distinct generations. The first generation, deployed with ACS400 and early ACS500 series drives (mid-1990s to early 2000s), used proprietary panel connectors with limited parameter copy functionality. The second generation introduced with ACS510 and ACS550 standardized the RJ-45-style panel bus connector and introduced the CDP312R and CDP312 assistant control panels, which remain in service at thousands of installations worldwide.

The ACS-AP series represents the third generation, introduced alongside the ACS380, ACS480, ACS580, and ACS880 platforms from approximately 2012 onward. Key architectural changes include: a graphical LCD display replacing the segmented LED of earlier panels, a USB port for parameter backup on select models, multilingual menu support (up to 12 languages), and compatibility with ABB's Drive Composer PC tool via the panel's USB interface. The ACS-AP-W variant introduced wireless remote panel capability for installations where cable routing is impractical.

Backward compatibility is a critical operational consideration. ACS-AP panels are not electrically or mechanically interchangeable with CDP312R panels. Facilities migrating from ACS550 to ACS580 drives must account for panel replacement in their upgrade bill of materials. The ACS-AP-S (standard) and ACS-AP-I (with I/O extension) share the same physical form factor but differ in firmware feature sets.

ACS-AP Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent the verified ACS-AP series product range. Units are classified by function:

Control Panels (HMI Keypads)

  • ACS-AP-S: Standard assistant control panel; graphical LCD; parameter read/write; fault log; compatible with ACS380, ACS480, ACS580, ACS880.
  • ACS-AP-I: Advanced assistant control panel with I/O extension capability; supports real-time I/O signal monitoring; same host drive compatibility as ACS-AP-S.
  • ACS-AP-W: Wireless remote control panel; Bluetooth-based communication; enables remote parameter access up to 10 m from drive; requires ACS-AP-W gateway module on drive.
  • ACS-AP-X: Explosion-proof rated control panel variant; ATEX/IECEx certified; for Zone 2 / Class I Div 2 hazardous area installations.

Legacy CDP / Assistant Control Panels (Compatible Predecessors)

  • CDP312R: Remote-mountable assistant control panel for ACS510, ACS550; segmented LED display; 7-digit parameter display; panel bus RJ-45 connector.
  • CDP312: Non-remote variant of CDP312R; direct drive-mount only; ACS510/ACS550 compatible.
  • CDP-AP: Transitional panel used with select ACS800 configurations; DDCS bus interface.

ACS880 / ACS800 Series Panels

  • ACS-AP-S (ACS880): Same part number, firmware variant specific to ACS880 primary control program; supports IEC 61131-3 application programming interface display.
  • DPMP-01: Blank panel cover for ACS880 when no keypad is installed; maintains IP54 enclosure rating.
  • DPMP-02: Door-mounting kit for ACS-AP panels on ACS880 cabinet doors; includes 3 m extension cable.

Panel Mounting & Extension Accessories

  • ACS-AP-EXT-3M: 3-meter panel extension cable; RJ-45 to panel bus; for remote door mounting.
  • ACS-AP-EXT-5M: 5-meter panel extension cable; same specification as 3M variant.
  • ACS-AP-EXT-10M: 10-meter panel extension cable; maximum recommended length for signal integrity.
  • MFDT-01: FlashDrop parameter download tool; compatible with ACS-AP parameter backup files; used for rapid commissioning of multiple identical drives.
  • DPMP-01C: Blank cover plate for ACS580 panel slot; IP55 rated; used when ACS-AP panel is remote-mounted.
  • DPMP-02C: Door-mounting kit for ACS580; includes panel gasket and 3 m cable assembly.

Quality Control for the ACS-AP Range

Each ACS-AP and CDP-series panel processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured test protocol before dispatch:

  • Panel Bus Communication Test: Unit is connected to a live ABB drive of the appropriate series. Full parameter read/write cycle is executed. Fault log access and reset functions are verified.
  • Display Integrity Check: All LCD pixels are activated and inspected for dead zones. Backlight uniformity is measured.
  • Keypad Actuation Test: All physical keys are actuated a minimum of 50 cycles. Tactile response and electrical continuity are confirmed for each key.
  • Connector Inspection: Panel bus connector pins are inspected under magnification for corrosion, deformation, or contamination. Connectors are cleaned with IPA and re-inspected.
  • Firmware Version Logging: The panel's embedded firmware version is recorded and included in the shipment documentation to allow the customer to verify compatibility with their drive control program version.
  • Burn-In Cycle: Refurbished units undergo a 4-hour powered burn-in at ambient temperature before final inspection.
