It provides the physical and logical communication layer between the controller CPU and the MasterBus 300 fieldbus network — a proprietary ABB protocol used extensively in AC450 and AC460 installations. Loss of this module severs the controller's ability to communicate with field I/O stations, rendering entire process segments inoperable.
