Technical Dossier
The DSQC module family originated with ABB's S4 and S4C+ controller generations in the 1990s, where discrete I/O boards such as the DSQC328 and DSQC351 handled analog and digital signal routing via proprietary backplane buses. With the introduction of the IRC5 controller in 2004, ABB transitioned to a modular, hot-swap-capable architecture based on the DSQC6xx series, incorporating DeviceNet and PROFIBUS-DP as primary fieldbus protocols. The DSQC652 (24 DI/DO), DSQC651 (16 DI), and DSQC653 (16 DO) became the standard I/O expansion modules for this generation.
The subsequent DSQC1xxx generation, introduced alongside the IRC5 Compact and IRB6700/IRB7600 platforms, migrated to EtherNet/IP and PROFINET as primary communication layers. Modules such as the DSQC1032 and DSQC1052 represent this architectural shift, featuring integrated safety I/O channels, higher channel density, and compatibility with ABB's SafeMove2 safety supervision software. Backward compatibility between DSQC6xx and DSQC1xxx generations requires adapter backplanes and firmware alignment — a critical consideration for mixed-generation maintenance environments.

Safety Modules
DSQC modules present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane bus interfaces, multi-protocol communication stacks, and safety-rated I/O channels. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all DSQC units prior to dispatch:
