The HENF board family was developed in parallel with ABB's Advant and MOD 300 control system generations, introduced from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Early HENF variants were designed around proprietary ABB backplane bus architectures using parallel data transfer protocols, with boards communicating via the MasterBus 300 or RCOM serial communication standards. As ABB transitioned its DCS portfolio toward the Industrial IT and System 800xA platforms in the 2000s, the HENF series entered a maintenance-only lifecycle. Compatibility between HENF sub-generations is board-slot and firmware-dependent; substitution of one HENF variant for another requires verification of hardware revision codes (e.g., P3LB, P2LA) and associated firmware baselines.
