Technical Dossier
The ABB MU200 and MU400 motor unit series are purpose-built drive components for ABB industrial robot manipulators, deployed across heavy-cycle automation environments including automotive body-in-white lines, chemical processing facilities, nuclear decommissioning cells, and refinery material handling systems. These motor units integrate brushless AC servo motors with precision gearboxes and encoder feedback assemblies, forming the primary axis actuation layer within ABB's IRC5 and S4C+ robot controller ecosystems. Global installed base spans several hundred thousand robot axes, making lifecycle parts availability a critical operational requirement for plant maintenance teams worldwide.
ABB's motor unit architecture for industrial robots has progressed through three distinct generations. The first generation, introduced with the S4 controller platform in the mid-1990s, used resolver-based feedback and separate brake modules. The second generation, aligned with the S4C+ platform, consolidated brake circuits into the motor unit housing and standardized the M12 connector interface, reducing field wiring complexity. The MU200 and MU400 series represent the third-generation architecture, introduced alongside the IRC5 controller (launched 2004), featuring integrated absolute multi-turn encoders, IP67-rated housings, and a unified mechanical interface compatible with IRB 1600, IRB 2400, IRB 4400, IRB 4600, IRB 6640, and IRB 6700 manipulator families.
Compatibility note: MU200-series units (lower torque envelope, ~200 Nm peak) are designated for axes 4-6 (wrist axes) on mid-to-large payload robots. MU400-series units (higher torque envelope, ~400 Nm peak) serve axes 1-3 (base, lower arm, upper arm) on the same robot families. Cross-series substitution is not supported without mechanical and firmware reconfiguration.
MU200 — Wrist Axis Motor Units (Axes 4-6, ~200 Nm)
MU400 — Base & Arm Axis Motor Units (Axes 1-3, ~400 Nm)
ABB motor units contain integrated gearboxes, servo motors, encoder assemblies, and brake circuits within a single sealed housing. Standard visual inspection is insufficient to validate functional integrity. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all MU200 and MU400 units prior to dispatch:
All units ship with a test report and 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects.
