Technical Dossier
The ABB PSP (Pump Softstarter) series is a dedicated line of solid-state motor soft starters engineered for pump and fan applications in heavy industrial environments including petrochemical refineries, water treatment facilities, offshore platforms, and nuclear auxiliary systems. Deployed globally across critical infrastructure, PSP units reduce mechanical stress during motor start-up by controlling voltage ramp-up, eliminating water hammer in pipeline systems and extending motor bearing life. The PSPCB-500C/S 1SFA899020R2500 is the primary control circuit board for the PSP 500 frame size, governing firing angle control, fault diagnostics, and thyristor gate drive logic.
ABB introduced the PSP softstarter platform as a successor to its earlier PSR and PSTB compact starter lines, targeting applications where pump-specific control algorithms (soft-fill, deceleration control, kick-start) were required. Early PSP units (PSP16–PSP85) used analog firing boards with discrete thyristor gate circuits. Mid-generation units (PSP105–PSP250) transitioned to hybrid digital/analog control PCBs with integrated fault memory. The current generation (PSP370–PSP570) employs fully digital DSP-based control boards — of which the PSPCB-500C/S 1SFA899020R2500 is the primary representative for the 500A frame. Compatibility between generations is limited: control boards are frame-specific and cannot be cross-fitted between current ratings. Firmware is stored on-board and is not field-upgradeable without ABB service tools. As the PSP line has entered its mature/end-of-active-production phase in several frame sizes, long-term maintenance support for installed base units is the primary procurement driver for this part.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced components within the ABB PSP softstarter product family, organized by functional category:

PSP control boards such as the PSPCB-500C/S 1SFA899020R2500 undergo a structured verification protocol prior to dispatch. Each board is bench-tested under simulated load conditions using a dedicated PSP500 test chassis. Thyristor gate drive signals are verified at all six firing channels using an oscilloscope to confirm symmetrical conduction angles. Fault memory registers are cleared and re-initialized. Backplane connector integrity is inspected under magnification for cold solder joints and pin deformation. Power supply rails (+5V, +15V, ±15V) are load-tested to rated current. Final functional verification is performed with a motor simulator to confirm soft-start ramp response and fault trip thresholds. Units failing any stage are quarantined and not released for sale.
