ABB SNAT Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of SNAT Architecture

The SNAT module family was introduced as part of ABB's drive control platform standardization effort in the early 1990s, designed to provide a consistent terminal and interface standard across the ACS600 and ACS800 drive families. Early SNAT modules focused on analog and digital I/O termination, with subsequent generations adding fieldbus interface capability, expanded channel counts, and improved EMC shielding for high-noise industrial environments.

Compatibility note: SNAT modules are not cross-compatible with ACS880-series RDIO, RAIO, or RCAN option boards. Substitution requires engineering validation of connector type, signal voltage range, and backplane bus protocol.

SNAT Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced models within the ABB SNAT series. Each entry reflects the module's primary functional role within ACS600/ACS800 drive control systems.

SNAT604IFS: Fiber optic interface terminal block module for ACS600/ACS800 drive systems, providing optical isolation between control board and field wiring.
SNAT601CNT: Pulse encoder interface module; supports incremental encoder feedback for closed-loop speed control applications.
SNAT602ANL: Analog I/O terminal module; 4 analog inputs / 2 analog outputs, ±10V / 4–20mA configurable per channel.
SNAT603DIG: Digital I/O expansion module; 8 DI / 6 DO, 24VDC logic level, DIN rail mountable.
SNAT605PTC: Motor thermistor (PTC/NTC) interface module; provides motor thermal protection input to drive control board.
SNAT606RLY: Relay output module; 3 relay outputs, rated 250VAC/8A, for fault and status signaling.
SNAT607EXT: I/O extension terminal block; expands standard I/O capacity for multi-motor or complex process applications.
SNAT608FBK: Feedback signal conditioning module; signal filtering and scaling for tachometer or resolver inputs.
SNAT609COM: Serial communication interface module; RS-485 / RS-232 selectable, supports Modbus RTU protocol.
SNAT610PRF: Profibus DP adapter interface terminal module; connects ACS800 drive to Profibus DP fieldbus network.
SNAT611CAN: CANopen interface terminal module; enables CANopen network integration for ACS600 series drives.
SNAT612ISO: Galvanic isolation module; provides 1500V isolation between field wiring and drive control circuitry.
SNAT613PWR: Auxiliary 24VDC power distribution terminal module; supplies logic power to I/O modules in multi-module configurations.
SNAT614EMC: EMC filter terminal block; suppresses conducted interference on analog signal lines in high-noise environments.
SNAT615STO: Safe Torque Off (STO) interface terminal module; routes STO safety signals per IEC 62061 / EN ISO 13849-1.
SNAT616DPX: Duplex fiber optic terminal module; dual-channel optical interface for redundant communication configurations.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete SNAT Series Parts

The SNAT series presents a well-documented sourcing challenge: ABB has progressively discontinued active production of older SNAT variants as the ACS600 and ACS800 platforms approach end-of-support status. Standard distribution channels — authorized ABB distributors and regional stocking partners — carry limited or zero inventory for many SNAT part numbers, particularly those with low annual demand volumes.

Quality Control for the SNAT Range

SNAT modules interface directly with drive control backplanes and field wiring terminations, making functional verification essential before installation. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all SNAT units processed through our facility:

Visual inspection: PCB surface examination for corrosion, burnt components, cracked solder joints, and connector pin damage. Fiber optic port inspection for lens contamination or physical damage (applicable to SNAT604IFS and similar optical interface variants).
Continuity and isolation testing: Terminal-to-terminal continuity verification against reference wiring diagrams. Hi-pot isolation test at rated voltage between field terminals and control circuitry (minimum 1500V for isolated variants).
Functional signal testing: Analog I/O modules tested with calibrated signal sources across full input/output range. Digital I/O modules tested for correct logic state switching at rated voltage. Relay output modules tested for contact resistance and rated switching capacity.
Fiber optic power testing: For SNAT604IFS and optical interface modules: transmit power and receive sensitivity measured with optical power meter. Connector cleanliness verified per IEC 61300-3-35.
Backplane connector inspection: Edge connector and DIN rail mounting mechanism inspected for mechanical integrity. Connector gold plating assessed for wear or oxidation.
Burn-in: Selected units subjected to 24-hour powered burn-in at operating temperature to screen latent failures prior to shipment.
