Technical Dossier
The IRB 460 was introduced as a successor to the IRB 660 palletizing line, optimized specifically for floor-level palletizing with a lower center of gravity and reduced cycle time. The original platform was designed around the IRC5 single-cabinet controller and used a 4-axis kinematic structure (axes 1–4) with a fixed wrist configuration. Early production units (pre-2012) used first-generation RV gearboxes on axes 2 and 3, which have since been superseded by updated gear units with revised sealing and lubrication specifications.
From 2014 onward, ABB introduced revised mechanical arm designs with updated cable harness routing (3HAC044168-001 series) and new motor flange tolerances. The transition to OmniCore controllers (post-2020) introduced changes to the drive module interface but retained mechanical compatibility with the existing arm and gearbox assemblies. This means that a significant portion of the mechanical spare parts — including gearboxes, bearings, and wrist units — remain cross-compatible across production years, though firmware and drive parameters must be matched to the specific controller generation.
End-of-life designation for the original IRC5-paired IRB 460 mechanical platform was announced in 2022, with ABB committing to spare parts availability through 2030. This makes third-party sourcing of genuine and refurbished components critical for operators maintaining existing installations beyond the OEM support window.
The following SKUs represent the core spare parts and module range for the ABB IRB 460 robot. Each entry is classified by functional category.
Gearbox & Wrist Units
Motors & Servo Drives
Controller & Drive Modules (IRC5 Compatible)
Mechanical & Structural Components
Extended lifecycle support contracts are available for facilities requiring guaranteed parts availability through 2030 and beyond, covering both mechanical assemblies and electronic drive modules.
All ABB IRB 460 spare parts processed by DriveKNMS undergo a structured inspection and functional verification protocol before dispatch. Gearbox units (RV series) are inspected for backlash within OEM tolerance bands, oil seal integrity, and input/output shaft runout. Each unit is rotated under load on a dedicated test bench to verify smooth operation across the full speed range.
Units that do not meet OEM specification thresholds are quarantined and not offered for sale. Refurbished units are clearly identified as such in all quotations and invoices.
