Technical Dossier
The ABB YPQ series is a family of connection boards, interface modules, and backplane components developed for ABB's PROCONTIC and MASTER series Distributed Control Systems (DCS). These modules are deployed across continuous-process industries including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power generation facilities, pulp and paper plants, and large-scale chemical processing installations. The YPQ series serves as the physical and electrical interconnect layer between field wiring and the DCS controller/I-O subsystems, making it a critical infrastructure component in installations where mean-time-between-failure requirements are measured in decades. Many facilities running ABB PROCONTIC T300, PROCONTIC CS31, or MASTER DCS platforms have YPQ-series boards embedded in their control cabinets with no planned replacement cycle, creating sustained demand for spare and replacement units.
The YPQ series was introduced as part of ABB's modular DCS philosophy in the late 1980s and early 1990s, designed to standardize field termination and signal conditioning across heterogeneous I/O configurations. Early-generation boards such as the YPQ 101A and YPQ 102A used passive backplane designs with direct screw-terminal field wiring. Mid-generation revisions introduced shielded signal paths and improved EMI rejection to meet IEC 61000 requirements in high-interference industrial environments. The YPQ 202A represents a second-generation connection board with an enhanced connector layout supporting higher channel density per rack slot.
As ABB transitioned its DCS portfolio toward the System 800xA platform and later AC500/AC800M architectures, the YPQ series entered a maintenance-only lifecycle phase. ABB ceased active production of most YPQ variants, but the installed base remains extensive. Compatibility between YPQ boards and their associated I/O modules (YPH, YPK, YPL series) is revision-specific; substituting a board without verifying the hardware revision suffix can result in signal mapping errors or bus communication faults. Engineers performing lifecycle extensions must cross-reference the ABB PROCONTIC hardware manual (document 1MRS750886) for pin-level compatibility data.
The following SKUs represent verified ABB YPQ series components. Each entry reflects the module's primary functional role within the PROCONTIC/MASTER DCS architecture.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for ABB YPQ series components that have reached end-of-life status with the OEM. The YPQ series is classified as a mature/declining lifecycle product; ABB no longer accepts new purchase orders for the majority of YPQ variants through standard distribution channels. DriveKNMS sources YPQ boards through decommissioned plant asset recovery, authorized surplus channels, and direct acquisition from facilities undergoing DCS migration to System 800xA or AC800M platforms.
For operators requiring long-term maintenance support on PROCONTIC or MASTER DCS installations, DriveKNMS offers: verified-original YPQ boards with full traceability documentation; cross-reference matching between discontinued YPQ part numbers and available functional equivalents; and consignment inventory programs for facilities that need guaranteed spare availability over multi-year maintenance contracts. All units are stored in ESD-controlled environments and shipped with anti-static packaging compliant with IEC 61340-5-1.
YPQ connection boards present specific test challenges due to their role as the signal interface layer between field wiring and DCS I/O modules. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to all YPQ units prior to dispatch:
Connector integrity inspection: All field-side screw terminals and system-side edge connectors are inspected under 10× magnification for pin deformation, oxidation, and contact plating wear. Terminals are torque-tested to OEM specification.
Isolation resistance test: Channel-to-channel and channel-to-ground isolation is verified at 500 VDC using a calibrated insulation resistance tester. Minimum acceptance threshold: 100 MΩ per IEC 61010-1.
Signal path continuity: Each signal trace from field terminal to system connector is verified for continuity and correct mapping against the ABB YPQ wiring diagram. Cross-wiring faults from prior installation are identified and documented.
Backplane bus compatibility check: Where applicable, boards are seated in a reference PROCONTIC rack and bus communication is verified using ABB diagnostic tooling to confirm correct slot addressing and module recognition.
Revision marking verification: Hardware revision suffix (A, B, C) is confirmed against the physical board marking and cross-checked against the order reference to prevent revision mismatch shipments.
