Technical Dossier
The 3500 Series was introduced in the early 1990s as a modular replacement for the earlier Bently Nevada 3300 and 7200 Series single-channel monitors. The platform was engineered around a 19-inch rack chassis with a dedicated backplane bus, enabling hot-swap module replacement without system shutdown — a critical requirement for continuous-process industries.
Generation 1 (1990s): Initial release established the rack/module topology with the 3500/01 Power Supply, 3500/20 Rack Interface Module (RIM), and early transducer I/O modules. Communication was limited to RS-232/RS-422 serial interfaces.
Generation 2 (2000s): Introduction of Ethernet-based communication via the 3500/92 Communication Gateway Module, enabling integration with DCS platforms (Honeywell DeltaV, Emerson Ovation, ABB 800xA). The 3500/22M Transient Data Interface (TDI) was added for waveform capture and dynamic data analysis.
Generation 3 (2010s–present): Enhanced cybersecurity hardening, IEC 62443 alignment, and expanded Modbus TCP/OPC-UA support. The 3500/53 Overspeed Detection Module was updated to meet SIL 2 requirements. Legacy modules from Generation 1 remain physically compatible with current rack chassis, though firmware interoperability must be verified for mixed-generation configurations.
The 3500 Series is now in a mature/sustained phase. Bently Nevada continues to supply spare parts and firmware updates, but new feature development is concentrated on the System 1 software platform and next-generation Orbit 60 Series. For sites committed to long-term 3500 operation, DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of both current-production and end-of-life 3500 modules.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly deployed modules within the Bently Nevada 3500 Series. Each entry includes a concise functional description for rapid identification by maintenance engineers and procurement teams.

3500/72-01-00-00: Enhanced process variable monitor; 8-channel analog input with expanded alarm configuration.
3500/92-01-00-00: Communication Gateway Module; Modbus RTU/TCP, OPC-DA, and Ethernet interface to DCS/SCADA.
A significant portion of the global 3500 Series installed base operates on modules that Bently Nevada has transitioned to limited-availability or end-of-life status. Generation 1 I/O modules, early RIM variants, and first-generation relay output cards are no longer manufactured but remain in active service at refineries and power plants with 20–30 year operational horizons.
The 3500 Series backplane architecture uses a proprietary high-speed serial bus for inter-module communication. Functional verification of 3500 modules requires rack-level testing rather than standalone bench testing, as module health is partially determined by backplane bus integrity and RIM communication handshake.
