Technical Dossier
The Bently Nevada 3500 Series is the industry-standard machinery protection system deployed across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and rotating equipment-intensive facilities. Introduced in the mid-1990s as the successor to the 3300 Series, the 3500 rack-based architecture provides continuous, real-time vibration, position, and process monitoring for critical rotating machinery including steam turbines, gas turbines, compressors, pumps, and generators. Its modular backplane design allows field-configurable I/O expansion without system shutdown, making it the preferred platform for long-lifecycle industrial installations where uptime is non-negotiable. Installed base estimates exceed tens of thousands of racks globally, with active deployments in facilities operated by Shell, ExxonMobil, Saudi Aramco, CNOOC, and comparable tier-1 operators.
The 3500 platform was engineered to replace the analog-dominant 3300 Series, introducing digital signal processing, configurable monitoring channels, and a standardized 19-inch rack form factor. Early production units (circa 1995–2002) used the original 3500/01 rack with a 16-slot backplane and relied on RS-232/RS-422 serial communication for host integration. The introduction of the 3500/22M Communications Gateway (circa 2003) added Modbus TCP and OPC-DA support, enabling integration with modern DCS platforms including Honeywell Experion, Emerson DeltaV, and ABB 800xA.
Between 2005 and 2012, Bently Nevada expanded the series with enhanced transducer interface modules supporting REBAM (Rolling Element Bearing Activity Monitor) and Keyphasor inputs, broadening applicability to gearboxes and reciprocating compressors. The 3500/92 Ethernet Communications Module (introduced ~2010) added OPC-UA and 100BASE-TX connectivity, aligning the platform with IEC 62443 industrial cybersecurity frameworks. Post-2015 production modules introduced conformal coating options for high-humidity environments and extended operating temperature ranges. The 135613-01 High Temperature Case Expansion Transducer Assembly represents a specialized transducer interface within this ecosystem, designed for case expansion measurement on large steam turbines operating at elevated ambient temperatures where standard transducer assemblies would exceed thermal limits.
Compatibility note: Early 3500/01 racks (pre-2000 firmware) require I/O module firmware upgrades before accepting post-2005 monitor cards. Mixed-generation rack configurations must be validated against Bently Nevada System Integration Guide 141228.

Relay Output Modules
Bently Nevada has progressively transitioned portions of the 3500 Series to end-of-active-support status, with several early-production modules (3500/01 original rack, 3500/40 non-M variant, 3500/22 non-M variant) no longer available through OEM channels. For facilities operating legacy 3500 racks under long-term service agreements or in jurisdictions where full system replacement is not economically viable, DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested surplus and refurbished 3500 Series modules.
Lifecycle extension services available: module-level functional testing, firmware version documentation, and long-term storage packaging per IPC-1601 moisture barrier requirements.
The 3500 Series backplane uses a proprietary high-speed serial bus for inter-module communication. Standard bench testing procedures are insufficient to validate module health; full functional verification requires rack-level integration testing with active backplane power and a reference Keyphasor signal source.
DriveKNMS quality control procedures for 3500 Series modules include: (1) Visual inspection per IPC-A-610 Class 2 criteria, with specific attention to backplane connector pin integrity and conformal coating condition on high-humidity variants. (2) Powered functional test using a calibrated 3500 test rack with known-good reference modules, verifying channel-by-channel alarm setpoint response, relay output actuation, and communications gateway handshake. (3) For transducer assemblies including the 135613-01, probe gap voltage verification using a Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8mm or equivalent proximitor, confirming linear output range within ±0.5% of factory specification. (4) Burn-in cycle: 24-hour continuous operation at 40°C ambient to screen latent component failures. (5) Final calibration record issued with each unit, traceable to NIST-referenced measurement standards.
