The Evolution of SLS1508 Architecture

The architecture centers on a redundant logic solver chassis (the SLS1508 base unit) accommodating up to eight I/O module slots. Communication with the DeltaV DCS host is handled via the SLS CHARM I/O subsystem or legacy hardwired interfaces. As the platform matured, Emerson introduced CHARM-based I/O (Characterization Modules) to reduce field wiring complexity, though the SLS1508 chassis itself remains a fixed-slot, backplane-based design. The series is now in a mature/end-of-active-development lifecycle; Emerson's current SIS offering transitions toward the DeltaV SIS with Electronic Marshalling (CHARM SIS), making long-term spare parts availability for SLS1508 a critical operational concern for existing installations.
