Foxboro SPEC-200 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of SPEC-200 Architecture

The SPEC-200 system was introduced in the 1970s as a successor to Foxboro's earlier pneumatic and early electronic control platforms. Its architecture is built around the 200 mm (8-inch) card format inserted into standardized racks, with a passive backplane that routes power and signal buses. Early generations focused on single-loop PID control with manual/auto transfer stations. Through the 1980s, Foxboro expanded the catalog to include cascade controllers, ratio controllers, and feedforward summing modules, enabling more complex process strategies without requiring a digital host system.

SPEC-200 Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent verified, commonly deployed modules within the Foxboro SPEC-200 platform. Modules are classified by functional category.

Controllers & Indicators

  • SPEC-200: Base designation for the SPEC-200 panel-mounted analog control system platform.
  • 2AO-D1: Single-loop PID controller with auto/manual transfer; 4–20 mA output; standard DIN rail mount.
  • 2AO-D2: Dual-loop PID controller module; supports cascade and ratio control configurations.
  • 2AO-I1: Single-loop indicator module; analog bar graph display; 4–20 mA input signal.
  • 2AO-I2: Dual-loop indicator; simultaneous display of two process variables on a single faceplate.
  • 2AO-R1: Single-pen strip chart recorder interface module; integrates with external recorder hardware.
  • 2AO-S1: Manual loader / set point station; operator interface for remote set point adjustment.
  • 2AO-S2: Ratio set point station; calculates and transmits ratio-adjusted set point to downstream controller.

I/O Signal Conditioning Modules

  • 2AO-C1: Input signal conditioner; converts thermocouple or RTD input to 4–20 mA process signal.
  • 2AO-C2: Millivolt input conditioner; linearizes low-level analog signals from strain gauges or load cells.
  • 2AO-C3: Frequency-to-analog converter; converts pulse/frequency input (flow meters) to 4–20 mA.
  • 2AO-C4: Square root extractor module; used with differential pressure transmitters for flow measurement.
  • 2AO-C5: High/low signal selector; selects between two process inputs based on configured logic.
  • 2AO-C6: Analog summer/multiplier; performs arithmetic operations on up to three 4–20 mA signals.

Power Supply Modules

  • 2AO-P1: 24 VDC rack power supply module; provides regulated DC power to SPEC-200 rack backplane.
  • 2AO-P2: Redundant power supply module; hot-standby configuration for critical loop power continuity.

Communication & Interface Modules

  • 2AO-L1: I/A Series interface adapter; bridges SPEC-200 analog loops to Foxboro I/A Series FBM network.
  • 2AO-L2: HART pass-through module; enables HART communication from field devices through SPEC-200 racks.

Quality Control for the SPEC-200 Range

SPEC-200 modules present specific quality control challenges due to their analog circuit architecture, passive backplane interface, and age-related component degradation. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all SPEC-200 modules prior to shipment. Each module undergoes visual inspection for PCB damage, corrosion, and component substitution. Functional testing is performed using a dedicated SPEC-200 rack test bench configured to replicate standard backplane signal conditions. PID controller modules are tested across the full output range (4–20 mA) with simulated process variable inputs, verifying proportional, integral, and derivative response parameters. Signal conditioning modules are tested against calibrated reference signals to verify input linearization accuracy and output scaling. Power supply modules are load-tested at rated current with ripple and regulation measurements recorded. All test results are documented and accompany the shipment. Modules that do not meet original Foxboro performance specifications are rejected from inventory and not offered for sale.
