The GE UR (Universal Relay) Series, developed by GE Grid Solutions (formerly GE Multilin), is one of the most widely deployed protection relay platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, oil refineries, offshore platforms, and high-voltage transmission substations, the UR Series provides a unified hardware architecture for feeder, transformer, motor, generator, bus, and line protection applications. Its modular slot-based chassis design allows end users to configure protection IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) to exact application requirements without replacing the entire relay unit. The platform's longevity — spanning from the late 1990s to the present — has made it a de facto standard in utility and industrial protection engineering, with millions of installed units across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
The UR Series was introduced by GE Multilin in the late 1990s as a successor to earlier discrete relay technologies, consolidating protection, control, metering, and communications into a single IED platform. The first-generation UR chassis used a 19-slot modular backplane with a proprietary high-speed inter-module bus. Early CPU modules (Type 9E, 9F) provided basic ANSI protection functions with RS-232/RS-485 serial communications. The second generation introduced Ethernet-capable CPU modules (Type 9G, 9H) supporting IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging, DNP3, and Modbus TCP — enabling integration into modern SCADA and substation automation systems.
The UR-9HH represents the high-performance tier of the current UR CPU generation, featuring dual Ethernet ports, enhanced processing capacity for complex protection schemes, and full IEC 61850 Edition 2 compliance. Compatibility across UR chassis generations (UR, URplus, UR-D) requires careful firmware and hardware revision matching. Modules from early-generation chassis (pre-2005) are not directly interchangeable with URplus-era hardware without backplane and firmware validation.
