Honeywell FC-BSN Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of FC-BSN Architecture

The FC-BSN series was introduced as part of Honeywell's FSC (Fail-Safe Controller) platform, which entered the market in the early 1990s as a dedicated SIS solution. The original FSC architecture used a proprietary node bus (the Safety Node Bus, SNB) to interconnect the central processing unit with distributed I/O racks. Early FC-BSN variants were designed for single-bus, simplex configurations. As process safety standards evolved and SIL 3 applications demanded higher redundancy, the series expanded to support dual-bus and redundant node configurations.

Through the 2000s, Honeywell integrated the FSC platform into the broader Safety Manager product line, maintaining backward hardware compatibility with FC-BSN modules while introducing firmware-level enhancements. By the 2010s, the Safety Manager SC (SMSC) platform emerged as the designated successor, utilizing updated communication protocols. However, the FC-BSN series remains in active service at thousands of legacy installations worldwide, and Honeywell's end-of-life announcements for specific FC-BSN variants have created sustained demand for certified replacement and spare parts. Compatibility between FC-BSN generations requires careful revision-level verification, particularly for backplane slot assignments and bus termination settings.

Quality Control for the FC-BSN Range

FC-BSN series modules incorporate complex backplane bus transceivers and safety-rated communication logic that require specialized test procedures beyond standard power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following protocol to all FC-BSN units processed through its facility:
