Indramat HDS Series Technical Notes

The Indramat HDS (High Dynamic Servo) series represents one of the most widely deployed AC servo drive platforms in global heavy industry. Manufactured by Indramat GmbH — subsequently absorbed into Bosch Rexroth — the HDS series achieved dominant installation bases across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, offshore drilling platforms, continuous casting lines, and large-format printing machinery. Its closed-loop vector control architecture, combined with a standardized SERCOS fiber-optic interface, made it the reference design for coordinated multi-axis motion in the 1990s and 2000s. Installed units remain operational in facilities across Europe, North America, and East Asia, creating sustained demand for spare parts, repair services, and lifecycle extension support.

The Evolution of HDS Architecture

The HDS series was introduced as a successor to the earlier TDM (Transistor Drive Module) and KDS drive families, addressing the need for higher power density and digital fieldbus integration. First-generation HDS units (HDS01, HDS02) used analog command interfaces and were compatible with the CLMS and CLM controller families. The HDS03 and HDS04 generations introduced native SERCOS I (IEC 61491) fiber-optic ring support, enabling deterministic real-time synchronization across up to 254 axes at 2 ms cycle times.

The HDS04.2 sub-series — to which the HDS04.2-W200N-HS23-01-FW belongs — represents the mature production variant with enhanced firmware (FW suffix), revised power stage IGBTs for improved thermal cycling tolerance, and expanded parameter memory. The W200N designation specifies a 200 A continuous output current rating in the N (normal) cooling class. The HS23 firmware variant enables high-speed spindle mode with encoder interpolation up to 2048 lines/rev.
