Allen-Bradley 1734 POINT I/O Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of 1734 POINT I/O Architecture

The 1734 POINT I/O platform was introduced by Rockwell Automation in the late 1990s as a successor to the 1771 and 1746 fixed I/O architectures, addressing the industry shift toward distributed control and fieldbus-based communication. Early revisions supported DeviceNet as the primary network adapter (1734-ADN), establishing the series in automotive assembly and material handling applications. The introduction of the 1734-AENT EtherNet/IP adapter in the mid-2000s marked the platform's transition into process industries, where deterministic Ethernet communication became the standard. Subsequent hardware revisions (Series A through Series C on select modules) improved noise immunity, expanded analog resolution from 12-bit to 16-bit on current-loop modules, and introduced HART pass-through capability on select analog modules. The 1734-IE4C specifically provides four channels of 4–20 mA current input with 16-bit resolution, directly addressing the signal standard used by the majority of field transmitters in process automation. As of 2024, the 1734 platform remains in active production, though several early DeviceNet-only adapter variants have reached end-of-life. Rockwell Automation's recommended migration path for obsolete 1734 nodes is the 5069 Compact I/O platform; however, the 1734 series retains a massive installed base requiring long-term spare parts support through 2035 and beyond.
