The Allen-Bradley SLC 500 platform was the backbone of North American and global discrete manufacturing automation from the late 1980s through the 2000s. Tens of thousands of SLC 500 installations remain in active production service today — in automotive stamping lines, food and beverage packaging, water treatment facilities, and chemical processing plants. Rockwell Automation has formally discontinued the SLC 500 product line, including the 1746-P1 power supply, and no longer provides manufacturing support or new inventory.
The power supply is the single most failure-prone module in any PLC chassis. It operates continuously under thermal and electrical load, and its electrolytic capacitors degrade over time regardless of usage cycles. A failed 1746-P1 does not merely halt one machine — it halts every I/O module seated in that chassis. In a just-in-time production environment, that means the entire line stops.
The 1746-P1 is not interchangeable with higher-wattage SLC 500 power supplies such as the 1746-P2 or 1746-P4 without verifying chassis load calculations. Substitution without engineering review is a documented cause of field failures. DriveKNMS supplies the correct part number — not a substitute — to eliminate that risk.
Every 1746-P1 unit processed through DriveKNMS undergoes a structured five-step inspection protocol before it is offered for sale:
Units that do not pass all five steps are not offered for sale. Condition grade (New Surplus, Refurbished, or Used-Tested) is disclosed on every order confirmation.
Q: Can the 1746-P1 be repaired rather than replaced?
A: Board-level repair is technically possible but requires specialized capacitor replacement and calibration equipment. For most facilities, the labor cost of repair exceeds the cost of a tested replacement unit. DriveKNMS recommends replacement over repair for production-critical applications.
