Technical Dossier
The ProSoft Technology MVI56E series represents one of the most widely deployed communication module families in the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix platform. Installed across global heavy industry sectors — including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, offshore oil & gas platforms, and large-scale chemical processing plants — the MVI56E series provides protocol bridging between ControlLogix backplanes and legacy or third-party industrial networks. Its modular architecture allows a single ControlLogix chassis to interface with Modbus RTU/ASCII, DNP3, IEC 60870-5, PROFIBUS DP, and numerous other protocols without replacing existing field infrastructure. The series is a standard component in long-lifecycle DCS/PLC hybrid architectures where protocol interoperability is a non-negotiable operational requirement.
The MVI56E series is the enhanced successor to the original MVI56 series, introduced by ProSoft Technology to address the increasing demand for Ethernet-based configuration and diagnostics in ControlLogix environments. The original MVI56 modules communicated exclusively via the ControlLogix backplane and required RS-232/RS-485 serial connections for protocol ports. The MVI56E generation added an onboard Ethernet port, enabling web-based diagnostics, remote configuration via ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB), and integration with plant-level SCADA systems without consuming additional network hardware.
Key architectural milestones: The MVI56 (Gen 1) established the protocol gateway concept within the ControlLogix chassis. The MVI56E (Gen 2) introduced the Ethernet diagnostics port and improved ladder logic sample code. The MVI56EMNET and MVI56E-MNET variants added Modbus TCP/IP alongside serial Modbus, enabling dual-protocol operation. As Rockwell Automation's ControlLogix platform evolved from the 1756-L6x to 1756-L7x and 1756-L8x processors, MVI56E modules maintained backward compatibility across chassis generations. Many MVI56E variants are now in the mature/end-of-active-development phase; ProSoft continues to provide firmware support and replacement stock, making third-party sourcing critical for facilities operating legacy installations.
The following SKUs represent the core MVI56E series product range, classified by communication protocol and function. Each module occupies one slot in a standard 1756 ControlLogix chassis.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of MVI56E series modules, including variants that ProSoft Technology has transitioned to limited or end-of-life support status. For facilities operating ControlLogix systems with 10–20 year maintenance horizons — common in nuclear, refinery, and water treatment applications — the ability to source tested replacement modules without a full system upgrade is operationally and economically critical.
DriveKNMS sources MVI56E modules through authorized distribution channels and verified secondary market suppliers. All units undergo functional verification before dispatch. For discontinued variants where new stock is unavailable, DriveKNMS provides refurbished units with documented test records. Lead times for standard variants are typically 1–5 business days; rare or discontinued variants are quoted individually. Customers requiring long-term supply agreements for multi-year maintenance contracts are accommodated with reserved stock arrangements.
MVI56E modules integrate directly into the ControlLogix backplane via the 1756 series connector. Quality verification for these modules requires protocol-specific test environments that replicate actual field conditions. DriveKNMS applies the following test procedures to all MVI56E units:
