Technical Dossier
The Yokogawa AIP (Analog Input Processor) series is a core I/O module family deployed within the CENTUM CS 3000 and CENTUM VP Distributed Control Systems (DCS). These systems hold a dominant installed base across global heavy industries including petrochemical complexes, nuclear power facilities, crude oil refineries, LNG terminals, and pulp & paper plants. The AIP series handles analog signal acquisition from field instruments — thermocouples, RTDs, 4–20 mA transmitters — and converts them into digital process values for the field control station (FCS). Their high-density channel architecture and redundancy support make them a structural component in safety-critical continuous process environments. Installed units are routinely maintained for 20–30 year operational cycles, making spare part availability a persistent procurement requirement for plant engineers and maintenance contractors worldwide.
The AIP module lineage traces to Yokogawa's CENTUM CS platform introduced in the mid-1990s, which established the node-based I/O architecture still in use today. The original CS 1000/3000 AIP modules used a parallel backplane bus with fixed-function analog front ends. With the transition to CENTUM VP (circa 2008), Yokogawa retained backward-compatible form factors while upgrading internal signal processing to higher-resolution ADCs and improved noise rejection. This cross-generation compatibility is a defining characteristic: AIP modules from the CS 3000 era can in many configurations operate within VP field control stations, reducing upgrade costs for brownfield sites.
Key architectural milestones include the introduction of the dual-redundant power feed design, the shift from 8-channel to 16-channel high-density variants, and the integration of HART pass-through capability in later revisions. Modules are mounted on Nest units (ANB10S, ANB11S) and communicate via the V-net/IP or ESB bus depending on generation. End-of-life announcements for CS 3000 hardware have been issued by Yokogawa, placing the entire CS 3000 AIP catalog in the obsolescence management phase — a condition that elevates the strategic importance of certified aftermarket sourcing.

Communication & CPU Modules
AIP series modules incorporate a multi-layer internal architecture: analog front-end signal conditioning, isolation barriers, ADC conversion stage, and ESB/V-net communication interface. Each of these subsystems requires independent verification during refurbishment. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all AIP series units:
