Technical Dossier
The Yokogawa CENTUM CS3000 is a field-proven Distributed Control System (DCS) platform with a global installed base spanning petrochemical complexes, nuclear power facilities, LNG terminals, crude oil refineries, and continuous process manufacturing plants. First introduced in the late 1990s as the successor to the CENTUM CS, the CS3000 architecture established Yokogawa's position as a tier-one DCS supplier across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. Its modular field control station (FCS) design, redundant CPU architecture, and Vnet/IP communication backbone made it the reference platform for high-availability process control through the 2000s and into the 2010s. Facilities running CS3000 represent decades of capital investment in engineering, configuration, and operator training — making long-term spare parts availability a critical operational requirement.
The CENTUM platform lineage begins with CENTUM (1975), progressing through CENTUM-XL, CENTUM CS (1993), CENTUM CS3000 (1998), and ultimately CENTUM VP (2008) as the current-generation successor. The CS3000 introduced a Windows-based Human Interface Station (HIS), replacing proprietary operator consoles, and adopted standard Ethernet (Vnet/IP) as its primary control bus — a significant architectural shift from the earlier proprietary Vnet token-ring topology used in CENTUM CS.
The CS3000 R3 revision introduced enhanced CPU processing capacity and expanded I/O density per field control station. Compatibility between CS and CS3000 I/O modules is partial: certain analog and digital I/O cards are interchangeable at the hardware level, but firmware and node address configuration must be validated against the specific FCS generation. Migration from CS3000 to CENTUM VP is supported via Yokogawa's MIGRATEPLANT program, which preserves existing I/O wiring and field instruments while replacing the control and communication layers. Sites that have not migrated remain dependent on CS3000 spare parts, many of which entered end-of-life status between 2015 and 2022.

Yokogawa formally transitioned CS3000 to end-of-active-support status, with repair and replacement services progressively discontinued from 2018 onward. For facilities operating CS3000 FCS hardware beyond the OEM support window, DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested surplus and refurbished CS3000 modules — including processor units such as the CP451-11, I/O cards, communication adapters, and power supply assemblies.
CS3000 modules present specific test challenges due to their proprietary Vnet/IP backplane communication protocol and multi-layer PCB construction. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to CS3000 inventory:
