Technical Dossier
The Mitsubishi MELSEC F1 Series is a compact, fixed-configuration programmable logic controller platform developed by Mitsubishi Electric for small-to-medium discrete automation applications. Introduced in the early 1980s as a successor to the F Series, the F1 line achieved widespread deployment across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical processing plants, nuclear facility auxiliary systems, automotive assembly lines, and refinery utility control loops. Its relay-output and transistor-output base units, combined with a straightforward ladder-logic programming model, made it the default entry-level PLC in Asian and European industrial markets throughout the 1980s and into the mid-1990s. Installed base estimates place the F1 Series among the highest-volume Mitsubishi PLC platforms ever produced, with units still operational in legacy plant environments requiring long-term maintenance support.

The MELSEC F1 Series was designed around a fixed I/O architecture, meaning the CPU, power supply, and I/O points are integrated into a single base unit rather than distributed across a backplane. This design reduced wiring complexity and panel footprint at the cost of expandability. The F1 platform introduced the FX programming protocol predecessor, using a dedicated handheld programmer (F1-20P) or the early MEDOC DOS-based software environment.
The F1 Series succeeded the original MELSEC F Series and was itself succeeded by the MELSEC F2 and subsequently the long-running MELSEC FX0, FX1, FX2, FX3, and FX5 families. Compatibility between F1 and later FX-series programs is not direct — ladder programs require manual conversion due to instruction set differences. This architectural discontinuity is the primary driver of demand for original F1 spare units, as plant operators running F1-based systems cannot perform a drop-in CPU swap with modern FX5U hardware without full re-engineering of the control program and I/O wiring.
The F1 Series entered end-of-life (EOL) status with Mitsubishi Electric, meaning no new production runs are scheduled and official factory support has been discontinued. Units are sourced exclusively through the secondary market, specialist distributors, and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Operations) suppliers.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory channel for Mitsubishi MELSEC F1 Series units sourced from decommissioned plant equipment, controlled-environment storage, and verified secondary-market suppliers. Because the F1 Series is fully discontinued at the OEM level, procurement lead times through standard distribution channels are indefinite. DriveKNMS addresses this gap through the following operational protocols:

F1 Series base units present specific testing challenges due to their integrated architecture. The CPU, power supply, and I/O circuits share a single PCB assembly, meaning a fault in any subsystem requires evaluation of the complete unit.
