Technical Dossier
The Honeywell Safety Manager FC Series (also referenced as the FSC — Fail Safe Controller — platform) is a dedicated safety instrumented system (SIS) deployed across the global process industries, including petroleum refining, petrochemical complexes, LNG terminals, nuclear auxiliary systems, and offshore production platforms. The FC Series architecture is certified to IEC 61511 and IEC 61508 SIL 2/SIL 3, making it one of the most widely installed safety PLC platforms in continuous-process heavy industry. Its modular backplane design supports hot-standby redundancy, deterministic scan cycles, and fault-tolerant I/O expansion — requirements that are non-negotiable in environments where a single undetected failure can trigger a process shutdown or safety incident.
The FC Series is the successor to the earlier Honeywell FSC (Fail Safe Controller) platform and shares backward-compatible field termination assembly (FTA) architecture with several legacy FSC modules, enabling phased migration without full I/O rewiring. Installed base estimates place the FC/FSC platform in several thousand safety loops across refineries and chemical plants in the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
The Honeywell safety controller lineage begins with the TÜV-certified FSC platform introduced in the 1990s, which established the dual-processor, cross-checking safety architecture that underpins the modern FC Series. The FSC used a proprietary backplane bus and dedicated FTA wiring panels; these FTAs remain physically compatible with FC Series I/O modules, which significantly reduces migration costs for end users upgrading aging FSC installations.
The FC Series introduced a revised CPU module (FC-CPU) with expanded memory, faster scan rates, and Ethernet-based engineering workstation connectivity via the Safety Builder configuration tool. The I/O module range was extended to include universal input FTAs (accepting thermocouple, RTD, mA, and discrete signals on a single module), reducing panel footprint in brownfield retrofits. Communication adapters were added to support FOUNDATION Fieldbus, PROFIBUS DP, and Modbus RTU integration with Honeywell Experion PKS and third-party DCS platforms.
As of 2026, the FC Series is in a mature/extended-support lifecycle phase. Honeywell has transitioned new SIS projects to the Safety Manager SC (SMC) platform. However, the installed base of FC Series systems remains large, and Honeywell continues to provide spare parts and firmware support under long-term service agreements. End users operating FC Series systems should plan for lifecycle extension strategies, including third-party spare parts sourcing, to maintain SIL-rated availability through the next planned turnaround cycle.
